A Big Enough Trailer

A Big Enough Trailer

Trailer In the 1990s we did a lot of camping in our pop-up trailer. One of our last trips was down to the Virginia Beach area. When we pulled into the campsite it was pouring rain. As Katy and I struggled to pull out the beds (they got soaked) and raise the canvas, we looked at each other and said “we’re done with pop-ups”! It’s normal for a camping family to graduate from a pop-up to a tow-behind trailer, maybe 25 feet long. So we started to look at new trailers. I figured we would use it for a few years and then graduate to an even bigger trailer with a slide-out area.

Katy’s thought was: let’s get a longer trailer Boomtrail now, and let’s get a slide-out! And her main argument was our plan to get a dog. With a family of four and a large dog, it made a lot of sense to get a trailer that widened the living space. So we bought a 31′ slide-out Prowler.

Boomer loved it.

We started using it in 2001, and went to Sagamore Beach in April, Peter’s Pond Campground in May, up to Salisbury beach in September, and then New Hampshire in October.

Along the way, Boomer started to spend a lot of quality time with the Holt family. All nine of us Tom would pile into the Suburban and put Boomer in the back (which he hated, and always tried to weasel his way up to the middle seat).

We took a great picture of Boom enjoying a ride with Tommy and TJ Holt.

When he was outside of the trailer, we usually hooked him up to a long leash. Inevitably he would play with the leash on his own. We were at Peter’s Pond campground at Cape Cod, and Boomer had wandered away from the trailer about 30feet (the length of the leash) at the top of a small mound of dirt. He started turning around and the leash wrapped around his legs and hogtied him, and he tumbled down the hill. This happened to him over and over again!

It was a great decision to get that trailer. We had many more adventures than we can count, and Boomer was in all of them!

The Memorial Day camping trip with the Holts, the Vigeants, and Chuckie’s family was always great fun. Here are all of us in Maine……
