For Boomer it was a real treat to swim in the ocean, and on one special day he had the opportunity to take a day trip down to Cuttyhunk, the westernmost island in the Elizabethan chain (extending from the Cape towards Rhode Island).

The picture above shows Boomer riding on the ferry to visit his grandparents Jim and Mary. My Dad was assigned to pastor the Cuttyhunk church during the months of July and August. They had a parsonage that was really too small for all of us (plus a wet, smelly dog) to stay in. So we decided to visit just for a day.

And what a busy day it was! Cutty2

The first part of the morning was spent strolling on Barge’s Beach. The southern portion of this beach is mostly rocks and boat wreckage, and it is a great beach to find beach glass and other treasures that can be found by walking up and down the shore. Below is a picture of Boomer and his girl Becky, exploring the shore, looking for beach glass.

Church’s Beach was a more traditional, western-facing beach where families would go to play in the sand and swim. This was where Boomer would play fetch for hours. We brought a football to play with him, and he and Matthew spent a lot of time playing together.

Of course, he would roll in the sand and shake off as well.

He had a great day, and we had a beautiful ferry ride home that evening. It was always great to visit my parents on Cuttyhunk, but sometimes I wonder if that particular trip was really a getaway-day for Boomer!
