Boomer was a perfect outdoor dog. He loved to hike, and we loved to take him
with us. We climbed mountains and valleys in many different spots throughout New Hampshire, and I’m sure we’ll describe many of them in future blog posts.
The very, very first hiking experience we had was during Columbus Day Weekend of 2001. We took our trailer up to Danforth Bay Campground (formerly known as Shawtown) in Freedom, NH, and Boomer climbed his first mountain: Mary’s Mountain.
We also took him to the Wilderness Trail, a former railroad bed that provided a completely flat 3-mile walk into Franconia Falls. The Wilderness trail starting point was a parking lot on the Kangamacus Highway, and the trail was a gateway into the
Pemigiwasset Wilderness. The Pemi was the site of many, many Boomer adventures, including his famous Franconia Falls disappearing act. The picture on the right with Steve and Boomer was taken right at the entrance to the trail.
When we got onto that trail, and took Boomer’s leash off, he gave us that look that said “Seriously? No Leash?”. And then he smiled and started romping to and fro on the trail. He always looked for a stream or a mud puddle to jump in. Once he got wet enough he would roll in the dirt and leaves and hop up and shake it all over us.
Boomer was a great photographic subject whenever the foliage turned!
Below is a picture of him exploring the mountain stream that runs alongside the Wilderness trail.
