The Last Weekend

The Last Weekend

On the weekend of September 24-26,  Becky came home from college. It was a Friday afternoon, and all four of us were together again in the front yard (Katy, Becky, Matthew, and Steve). The sun was out. Becky’s friend Shannon was visiting.

Boomer was inside. He was having a rough week. His energy level was down, and we were worried about him.  As the five of us were gathered outside we knew that Boomer would typically be romping around outside, playfully going from one person to the next, and probably bringing a ball for someone to throw for him.  But his cancer kept him inside the house, laying on the floor.

Imagine our surprise when all of a sudden he just came romping out of the house and skipped around the yard to say hello to everyone!  Then he ran over to the middle of the yard and had a good roll on his back.

It was nothing less than a miracle.

And I believe it was.

Boomer would die within a week. This was the last opportunity that he would have to bless us all with his favorite activity: being outside with members of his family. I find it truly amazing that he came to life when Becky came home on a beautiful sunny day. He was touched by the hand of God for one last burst of energy. It was perfect.

There’s no other way to look at it.

It’s hard to write this post. There’s only one more left to write, and then the story of his life will be complete.

We still think about him all the time. This morning, Feb 18 2011,  Katy said that she heard a thump downstairs when she was lying in bed. She thought of him. He often would sleep downstairs next to the breezeway door, right beneath our bedroom. We could hear him plop down in his spot and sigh. Sometimes he would start clawing at the rug and then lay back down again.

When I think back to Boomer’s last weekend with us, I can’t help but be grateful that God gave him that one last romp and roll through the yard, on a beautiful sunny day, with his four favorite fans in the yard with him.
