Matthew and I decided to take Boomer hiking again in April of 2009, back to the Pemi Wilderness. However, this time we decided to hike with a twist: instead of going in via the Wilderness Trail, we would hike into Ethan Pond Shelter and then try and climb some peaks from there. We borrowed some snowshoes from my friend Mark at work (just in case the peaks had any snow on them!).
We had another twist this time. Boomer had his own doggie backpack!!! Matthew positioned him for a picture, and I snapped a beauty!
We were lucky that we had the snowshoes, because we had to put them on less than a mile into the hike! At some points on the trail there were over 4 feet of snow, and going was TOUGH, because I hadn’t planned on hiking in snowshoes with that much weight on my back. Fortunately, we made it to the shelter before dark, set up our tent, ate, and then crawled into bed and listened to the winter wind HOWL outside of our tent all night.
The next day, we put our snowshoes back on and took a short walk (we turned back quickly, too much snow!).
Here’s a picture of our shelter before we went for our hike, and another picture of the pond right near the shelter.
Matthew tried his hand at fishing, no luck!
Because there was so much snow, we decided to put our gear on and hike back. Boomer was none too happy to put the backpack back on! But as you can see, Matthew and he were ready to hike!
Matthew took a picture of Boomer and me as we prepared for our descent.
As we hiked further down the path, the snow started to disappear, and I tried to get Boomer to drink out of his dog bowl.
When we got to the bottom, Boomer was happy for us to take the pack off!
Our last picture of him on the trip was the traditional “Boomer is the King of the Hill” picture. It was tough hiking in all that snow but looking back now, it was an adventure!
